PM Modi meets NITI Aayog member Gobardhan Das, praising his expertise as the government reconstitutes the policy think tank with new leadership.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday met newly appointed NITI Aayog full-time member Gobardhan Das, describing him as an inspiring figure whose life journey reflects resilience and commitment to public service.
The meeting comes shortly after the Centre announced the reconstitution of the policy think tank, marking a significant reshuffle in India’s top advisory body on economic and social development.
PM Highlights Das’s Journey and Contributions
In a post shared on the social media platform X, the Prime Minister noted that Prof Das’s life has been shaped by struggles, which have further strengthened his dedication to humanitarian work and social service.
He emphasised that this commitment is reflected in Das’s academic and professional contributions, adding that his expertise will play a crucial role in strengthening India’s policy-making ecosystem.
Officials said the interaction underscores the government’s focus on bringing diverse expertise into policy formulation, particularly in areas linked to health and human development.
Reconstitution of NITI Aayog
The meeting follows the Union government’s recent announcement of a revamped leadership structure at NITI Aayog, aimed at enhancing its role as a central policy advisory institution.
Senior economist Ashok Kumar Lahiri has been appointed as the Vice-Chairperson of the think tank.
In addition to Prof Gobardhan Das, the government has inducted several prominent figures as full-time members, including:
- Rajiv Gauba
- K. V. Raju
- Abhay Karandikar
- M. Srinivas
The reconstitution reflects a broader effort to align policy expertise with evolving national priorities, including economic growth, digital transformation, and social welfare.
Focus on Health and Social Sector Policies
Prof Gobardhan Das brings a strong background in public health and immunology, areas that have gained increasing importance in recent years.
Government officials indicated that his insights are expected to contribute significantly to:
- Public health policy formulation
- Strengthening healthcare systems
- Advancing research-driven decision-making
- Improving human capital outcomes
His inclusion signals a continued emphasis on evidence-based policymaking, particularly in sectors that directly impact quality of life.
Strengthening India’s Policy Framework
NITI Aayog, established in 2015, serves as the government’s premier think tank, replacing the erstwhile Planning Commission. It plays a key role in designing strategic and long-term policies, fostering cooperative federalism, and driving innovation across sectors.
With the induction of new members, the institution is expected to further strengthen its advisory capacity and support the government in navigating complex developmental challenges.
A Renewed Push for Expert-Driven Governance
The meeting between Prime Minister Modi and Prof Gobardhan Das reflects the government’s intent to integrate academic expertise and real-world experience into governance.
As the reconstituted NITI Aayog begins its work, the inclusion of specialists from diverse fields is likely to shape policies that are more inclusive, data-driven, and responsive to emerging national needs.
