Tragedy in the Skies: Ahmedabad to London Flight Crashes After Takeoff

Ahmedabad, June 12, 2025 — A devastating air tragedy struck Ahmedabad today as Air India Flight AI171, en-route to London Gatwick, crashed shortly after takeoff from Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport. The Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner was carrying 242 people, including passengers and crew members.

The aircraft lost contact with air traffic control moments after issuing a distress “Mayday” call. It crashed into the Meghani Nagar residential area, striking the UG hostel mess of BJ Medical College. Emergency services rushed to the scene, battling flames and thick smoke as they worked to rescue survivors.

According to officials, at least 133 people have been confirmed dead, with many others injured and receiving treatment at nearby hospitals. Among the passengers were 169 Indian nationals, 53 British citizens, 7 Portuguese, and 1 Canadian.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed deep sorrow over the incident, stating, “The tragedy in Ahmedabad has stunned and saddened us. It is heartbreaking beyond words.” Civil Aviation Minister Rammohan Naidu is overseeing rescue efforts on the ground.

Air India has activated a dedicated helpline (1800 5691 444) for families seeking information. The Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) and the Aircraft Accident Investigation Bureau (AAIB) have launched a full investigation into the cause of the crash.

This marks one of the deadliest aviation disasters in recent Indian history and the first major crash involving a Boeing 787 in the country. Rescue operations are ongoing, and authorities urge the public to avoid the crash site to allow emergency teams to work efficiently.
