Vidarbha heatwave intensifies with temperatures nearing 47°C. Akola records highest temperature as Nagpur and other districts face severe heat.
The Vidarbha region of Maharashtra continues to grapple with an intense heatwave, with temperatures soaring close to 47°C across multiple districts, raising concerns about worsening conditions in the coming weeks.
According to weather observations, Akola recorded the highest temperature of the season at 46.9°C, making it one of the hottest locations in the country. Close behind was Amravati at 46.8°C, while Wardha and Yavatmal reported 46.4°C and 46°C respectively.
Nagpur and Chandrapur Remain Under Severe Heat Stress
The regional hub of Nagpur also experienced extremely high temperatures, with the mercury touching 45.5°C. The persistent heat has led to uncomfortable conditions for residents, particularly during peak afternoon hours.
Meanwhile, Chandrapur recorded around 45°C. The district, known for its coal reserves, often witnesses higher temperatures due to local geographical and industrial factors, further intensifying heat conditions.
Multiple Districts Cross 44°C Mark
Several other districts across Vidarbha reported temperatures well above 44°C, indicating the widespread nature of the heatwave:
- Bhandara – 44°C
- Buldhana – 43.5°C
- Brahmapuri – 44.2°C
- Gadchiroli – 44.6°C
- Gondia – 44.4°C
- Washim – 44.6°C
The consistent rise in temperatures across the region highlights the severity of the ongoing weather pattern.
Heatwave Likely to Intensify Further
Meteorological trends suggest that the heatwave conditions are likely to persist and may intensify in the coming days. With May approaching—typically the hottest month in central India—there are growing concerns that temperatures could cross current highs.
Experts warn that prolonged exposure to such extreme heat can pose serious health risks, including dehydration, heat exhaustion, and heatstroke, particularly for vulnerable groups such as children, the elderly, and outdoor workers.
Rising Concern Ahead of Peak Summer
The early onset of extreme temperatures in late April has already set the stage for a potentially severe summer in the region. Residents are being advised to take precautions, including staying hydrated, avoiding direct sun exposure during peak hours, and limiting outdoor activities.
Authorities are also expected to step up preparedness measures, including public advisories and arrangements for drinking water and healthcare support, as the region braces for continued heat stress.
