🚆 Delhi-Meerut Namo Bharat Corridor Hits Major Milestone with Trial Runs from New Ashok Nagar to Sarai Kale Khan
The National Capital Region Transport Corporation (NCRTC) has commenced trial runs between New Ashok Nagar and Sarai Kale Khan on the Delhi-Ghaziabad-Meerut RRTS (Namo Bharat) corridor. This marks a significant leap toward the completion of India’s first Regional Rapid Transit System (RRTS), designed to revolutionize urban mobility in the National Capital Region (NCR).

🚉 Namo Bharat Train Crosses Yamuna River for the First Time
The trial run, which began this week, witnessed the Namo Bharat train crossing the Yamuna River for the first time. The train journeyed at a controlled speed from New Ashok Nagar to Sarai Kale Khan, passing over the newly constructed 1.3-kilometre bridge supported by 32 pillars. The bridge spans 626 meters directly over the Yamuna, with the remaining stretch covering floodplain areas on either side. It runs parallel to the DND Flyway Bridge.
This engineering feat was no small challenge. The NCRTC successfully navigated construction complexities over densely populated zones such as the Barapullah flyover and the bustling Ring Road to bring this vision to life.
🔧 Integrated Testing Underway: Safety First
During the ongoing trial phase, NCRTC is focusing on testing the train’s integration with critical subsystems like the signalling systems, platform screen doors (PSDs), and overhead electrification (OHE). These tests ensure seamless coordination between various technologies involved in the project and ensure safety before public operations begin.
As per NCRTC officials, these trials will be followed by high-speed testing to assess the train’s full operational readiness.
🏗️ New Ashok Nagar to Sarai Kale Khan: A 4.5 km Leap Forward
This newly connected 4.5 km stretch from New Ashok Nagar to Sarai Kale Khan is a key segment in the overall 82-km-long Delhi-Meerut corridor. With this, passengers will soon be able to travel directly from Sarai Kale Khan to Meerut in under 60 minutes — a massive improvement over current commute times.
Station highlights at Sarai Kale Khan:
- 12 escalators and 4 lifts already installed
- 5 entry/exit gates under construction
- Platform Screen Doors operational
- Seamless integration with other public transport:
- Delhi Metro Pink Line
- Hazrat Nizamuddin Railway Station
- Veer Haqiqat Rai ISBT
- Ring Road Bus Stand
This ensures multi-modal connectivity and provides one of the most comprehensive commuter experiences in the region.

📊 The Bigger Picture: Namo Bharat’s Expanding Reach
The Delhi section of the RRTS corridor spans 14 km, encompassing three key stations:
- Sarai Kale Khan (under trial)
- New Ashok Nagar (operational)
- Anand Vihar (operational and underground)
As of now, Namo Bharat trains are already operational over a 55 km stretch from New Ashok Nagar to Meerut South. This includes 11 stations such as Sahibabad, Ghaziabad, Muradnagar, and Modinagar.
According to NCRTC, the entire 82 km Delhi-Ghaziabad-Meerut corridor is on track to become fully operational by the end of 2025, setting a new standard in high-speed commuter travel in India.
🛤️ India’s First RRTS: Speed, Comfort, and Green Mobility
The Namo Bharat trains can reach a maximum speed of 180 km/h and are designed for comfortable, fully air-conditioned rides. Apart from speed, these trains promise energy efficiency and reduced carbon emissions—positioning them as a sustainable choice for the future of Indian transportation.
As per a NITI Aayog report, traffic congestion in NCR contributes to a productivity loss of ₹60,000 crore annually (Source). Projects like Namo Bharat aim to significantly alleviate this pressure by offering fast, dependable alternatives to road travel.
A Game-Changer for NCR’s Future
The launch of trial runs from New Ashok Nagar to Sarai Kale Khan is a pivotal development in India’s ambitious RRTS project. Once completed, the Namo Bharat corridor will not only reduce travel times and congestion but also redefine how millions commute across the National Capital Region. With efficient multi-modal connectivity, future-ready infrastructure, and environmental sustainability at its core, the Delhi-Meerut RRTS is poised to become a model for urban mobility in India and beyond.
