PM Modi Congratulates Himanta Biswa Sarma as NDA Returns to Power in Assam for Third Consecutive Term

P M Modi congratulating Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma after NDA victory

PM Modi congratulated Himanta Biswa Sarma after the NDA formed the government in Assam for a third consecutive term, praising his leadership and development initiatives.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday congratulated Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma after the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) formed the government in the northeastern state for a third consecutive term, describing the development as a significant milestone in Assam’s political and developmental journey.

In a message posted on social media platform X, the Prime Minister praised Himanta Biswa Sarma’s administrative capabilities and credited him with spearheading several transformative initiatives that have contributed to Assam’s growth over recent years.

Calling the occasion a “special day for Assam,” PM Modi said the NDA’s return to power reflected the confidence reposed by the people in the alliance’s governance model and development-oriented policies.

“Today is a special day for Assam. The NDA government has assumed power for the third time in a row. I congratulate Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma on taking charge. He has established himself as an outstanding administrator and has carried out several pioneering initiatives for the state,” the Prime Minister wrote on X.

The Prime Minister further stated that his good wishes would continue to accompany the Chief Minister and the new government during the upcoming term, expressing confidence that Assam would continue progressing under the NDA administration.

The swearing-in of the new Assam government marked another major political achievement for the Bharatiya Janata Party-led alliance in the Northeast, a region where the BJP has significantly expanded its political footprint over the past decade.

Political analysts view the NDA’s third straight victory in Assam as a reaffirmation of the alliance’s electoral dominance in the state, particularly under the leadership of Himanta Biswa Sarma, who has emerged as one of the BJP’s most influential leaders in the Northeast.

The Prime Minister also extended congratulations to senior leaders who took oath as ministers in the new Assam cabinet, including Rameswar Teli, Atul Bora, Charan Boro, and Ajanta Neog.

In another social media message, PM Modi expressed confidence that the combined efforts of the ministers would accelerate Assam’s development journey and further strengthen governance in the state.

“I congratulate Rameswar Teli, Atul Bora, Charan Boro and Ajanta Neog on taking oath as ministers in the Assam government. My best wishes for their effective work in strengthening the state’s developmental journey,” the Prime Minister said.

The formation of the new government comes after the NDA registered a sweeping electoral performance in the Assam Assembly elections, securing a decisive majority in the 126-member Assembly. The BJP-led alliance’s victory reinforced its hold over the state, where it has consistently expanded its support base across urban, rural, and tribal regions.

The NDA coalition in Assam includes the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), the Asom Gana Parishad (AGP), and other regional allies. The alliance campaigned heavily on themes of infrastructure development, welfare delivery, economic growth, national security, and regional identity.

Throughout the election campaign, Himanta Biswa Sarma positioned the NDA government as a model of stability and development, highlighting achievements in road connectivity, healthcare expansion, educational reforms, investment promotion, and law-and-order management.

Observers note that Sarma’s strong organisational control, direct communication style, and active governance approach helped consolidate the BJP’s position in Assam, making him one of the party’s key faces in eastern and northeastern India.

During the campaign, Prime Minister Modi and several senior BJP leaders addressed multiple rallies across Assam, emphasising the concept of “double-engine government,” referring to coordination between the Centre and state governments under the BJP-led alliance.

The BJP leadership repeatedly projected Assam as a success story in terms of infrastructure growth and welfare implementation. Projects related to highways, railway connectivity, digital governance, petroleum development, and rural welfare were prominently highlighted during the campaign.

The Prime Minister’s congratulatory message also reflects the BJP’s broader strategy of consolidating its governance narrative in states where it has secured repeated electoral mandates.

Under Himanta Biswa Sarma’s leadership, Assam has witnessed major infrastructure and investment initiatives, including expansion of roads, bridges, medical colleges, and industrial projects. The government has also focused on tourism promotion, border-area development, and implementation of central welfare schemes.

Supporters of the NDA government argue that the administration has improved administrative efficiency and accelerated project execution across sectors. The government has also attempted to position Assam as a gateway to Southeast Asia under India’s Act East policy framework.

Meanwhile, Opposition parties in Assam have continued to criticise the BJP government over issues related to unemployment, inflation, minority concerns, and political centralisation. However, the NDA’s electoral performance indicates that the alliance succeeded in retaining broad public support despite political challenges.

The latest electoral outcome is also politically significant because Assam remains one of the BJP’s strongest states in the Northeast. The party’s continued dominance there is expected to influence its broader regional strategy ahead of future elections in other northeastern states.

Political commentators believe the third consecutive NDA government could lead to further continuity in policy implementation, particularly in sectors related to connectivity, industrial development, tourism, and public welfare.

The swearing-in ceremony witnessed the presence of senior BJP leaders, alliance representatives, government officials, and supporters from across the state. Security arrangements were heightened for the event, reflecting its political importance.

The return of the NDA government has also sparked celebrations among BJP workers and supporters across Assam, with party leaders describing the mandate as an endorsement of Prime Minister Modi’s leadership and the state government’s governance record.

Party leaders said the government’s next phase would focus on accelerating economic growth, attracting investment, improving employment opportunities, and strengthening social welfare infrastructure.

The Prime Minister’s public endorsement of Himanta Biswa Sarma once again underlines the Assam Chief Minister’s growing stature within the BJP’s national leadership structure. Over recent years, Sarma has played a prominent role not only in Assam politics but also in the BJP’s expansion strategy across the Northeast.

As the new government begins its third consecutive term, attention will now turn toward cabinet expansion, administrative appointments, and implementation of the alliance’s electoral promises.

Political observers believe the coming months will be crucial in determining how the NDA government balances development priorities, regional aspirations, and governance challenges in one of India’s most strategically important northeastern states.
