Kerala election trends 2026 show Congress-led UDF leading decisively, with leaders crediting Rahul Gandhi for the surge.
Early trends emerging from the ongoing Assembly election vote counting across five states indicate a strong performance by the Congress-led United Democratic Front (UDF) in Kerala, with party leaders attributing the apparent surge to the leadership of Rahul Gandhi.
As counting progressed, the UDF appeared to take a decisive lead over the ruling Left Democratic Front (LDF), raising the possibility of a shift in power after a decade of Left rule in the state.
Celebrations at Congress Headquarters
At the Congress headquarters in New Delhi, scenes of celebration unfolded as early leads pointed towards a comfortable advantage for the alliance. Senior leaders and party workers gathered to mark the occasion, cutting a cake in anticipation of a potential victory.
Among those present was K. C. Venugopal, the party’s national general secretary (organisation), who joined workers in acknowledging what could be a significant electoral turnaround in Kerala.
Leaders Credit Rahul Gandhi
Congress leaders were quick to credit Rahul Gandhi for the alliance’s performance. Party MP Imran Pratapgarhi said the results reflect the trust reposed by the people of Kerala in the Congress-led alliance.
“This victory belongs to the Congress, the UDF, and Rahul Gandhi,” he said, adding that replicating such unity across the country could strengthen the party’s prospects nationally.
Anti-Incumbency Against LDF
Senior Congress leader Shashi Tharoor pointed to anti-incumbency as a key factor behind the trends. He criticised the LDF government for failing to generate sufficient employment opportunities over the past decade.
According to him, the electorate has signaled a desire for change, with expectations that a new government would focus on investment, development, and welfare measures.
UDF Crosses Majority Mark in Trends
Congress MP K. Suresh noted that while counting was still underway, the UDF had already crossed the 100-seat mark in early trends in the 140-member Kerala Assembly.
He stated that once counting concludes, elected representatives of the alliance will convene in Thiruvananthapuram to decide the next course of action in consultation with party leadership.
Another MP, J. B. Mathew, described the performance as a “century” for the alliance, calling it a clear mandate from the people and a responsibility to deliver on promises.
Mixed Fortunes Across Other States
While Kerala trends favored the Congress-led alliance, the party’s performance in other states appeared less robust.
In West Bengal, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) held a commanding lead, followed by the All India Trinamool Congress (AITC), with Congress trailing significantly.
In Tamil Nadu, regional parties dominated early trends, with Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) leading, followed by Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) and All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK).
In Assam, the BJP maintained a clear advantage, while Congress remained in second position.
Meanwhile, in Puducherry, the All India N.R. Congress (AINRC) emerged as a key player in early results.
Congress Narrative Focuses on Kerala
Senior Congress leader Bhupinder Singh Hooda acknowledged that while the party’s performance in states like West Bengal and Assam may not meet expectations, Kerala stands out as a major success.
He emphasized that the party’s focused campaign, grassroots mobilisation, and internal unity in Kerala contributed significantly to the current trends.
Early Trends, Final Results Awaited
The data released so far represents early counting trends, and final results are yet to be officially declared by the Election Commission of India.
Election analysts caution that while trends provide a strong indication, outcomes can shift as counting progresses.
Political Implications
If the trends hold, the Congress-led United Democratic Front could return to power in Kerala, marking a significant political shift after ten years of LDF governance.
Such a result would:
- Reinforce Congress’s presence in southern India
- Boost party morale ahead of future elections
- Strengthen leadership narratives around Rahul Gandhi
At the same time, the BJP’s strong showing in West Bengal signals its expanding footprint in eastern India.
Kerala Emerges as Key Political Battleground
As counting continues, Kerala has emerged as the focal point of the 2026 Assembly election narrative. The apparent surge of the Congress-led alliance reflects a combination of anti-incumbency, strategic campaigning, and voter sentiment.
While the final outcome will only be confirmed after official results, early trends suggest that Kerala could play a pivotal role in reshaping the political landscape, offering the Congress a crucial victory even as its performance varies across other states.
