PM Modi inaugurates Ganga Expressway, Uttar Pradesh’s longest 594-km highway connecting Meerut to Prayagraj, boosting connectivity and economic growth.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday inaugurated the Ganga Expressway, the longest expressway in Uttar Pradesh, in Hardoi district, marking a significant milestone in the state’s infrastructure expansion push. The 594-kilometre greenfield corridor connects Meerut in western Uttar Pradesh to Prayagraj in the east, passing through 12 districts and hundreds of villages.
The project, developed at an estimated cost of ₹36,230 crore, is being positioned as a transformative infrastructure initiative aimed at reducing travel time, improving logistics efficiency, and accelerating economic development across regions that have historically faced connectivity gaps.
A Major Connectivity Boost Across Uttar Pradesh
The Ganga Expressway stretches across key districts including Meerut, Hapur, Bulandshahr, Amroha, Sambhal, Badaun, Shahjahanpur, Hardoi, Unnao, Rae Bareli, Pratapgarh and Prayagraj. Officials said the project required land acquisition across more than 18,000 hectares, with contributions from over one lakh farmers.
Speaking at the inauguration event, the Prime Minister said the expressway represents a new chapter in India’s infrastructure journey, aimed at integrating regional economies and strengthening supply chains.
The corridor is expected to significantly cut travel time between western and eastern Uttar Pradesh, which previously required long transit through congested highways and urban stretches. Once fully operational, the journey between Meerut and Prayagraj is expected to be completed in nearly half the earlier duration.
Roadshow and Temple Visit Precede Launch
Ahead of the inauguration, PM Modi held a roadshow in Varanasi, his parliamentary constituency, where he also offered prayers at the Kashi Vishwanath Temple. The visit formed part of his two-day tour of Uttar Pradesh focused on development and public outreach.
The Prime Minister later travelled to Mallawan in Hardoi district to formally inaugurate the expressway in the presence of senior political leaders and officials.
State Leadership Highlights Transformation Narrative
Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath described the expressway as a symbol of the state’s transformation into an investment-friendly destination.
Addressing the gathering, he said that large-scale infrastructure development has played a central role in reshaping the state’s economic landscape. He contrasted the current phase of development with earlier years, stating that improved law and order and better connectivity have encouraged industrial growth.
He also acknowledged the role of farmers who provided land for the project, noting that their participation was crucial in enabling the timely completion of such a large-scale initiative.
Engineering Features and Modern Infrastructure
The Ganga Expressway has been designed as a six-lane access-controlled highway, with provisions to expand it to eight lanes in the future. Among its notable features is a 3-kilometre-long airstrip in Shahjahanpur district, intended for emergency use by the Indian Air Force.
Other infrastructure elements include:
- Electric vehicle charging stations at regular intervals
- Food plazas and rest areas approximately every 50 kilometres
- Petrol pumps and service centres
- An Intelligent Traffic Management System (ITMS) for real-time monitoring and safety
Officials said the expressway has been built with a focus on sustainability and future mobility needs, including provisions for electric vehicles and advanced traffic systems.
Economic Impact and Industrial Potential
Experts believe the expressway will play a key role in boosting industrial development along its corridor. Improved connectivity is expected to reduce transportation costs for businesses, making it easier to move goods between production centres and markets.
The project is also expected to facilitate the development of industrial clusters, logistics hubs, warehousing zones, and agro-processing units along its route. Regions in central and eastern Uttar Pradesh, which have traditionally lagged in industrial growth, could particularly benefit from the improved connectivity.
The expressway will also integrate with other major highways, including the Purvanchal Expressway, Agra-Lucknow Expressway, Bundelkhand Expressway and the Gorakhpur Link Expressway, creating a wider network of high-speed road connectivity across the state.
Strategic Importance for Logistics and Defence
Beyond economic benefits, the expressway is also seen as strategically important. The inclusion of an emergency airstrip enhances its utility for defence operations, allowing fighter jets to land and take off during emergencies.
Additionally, faster road connectivity is expected to improve disaster response times and facilitate quicker movement of emergency services across districts.
Political and Policy Context
The foundation stone of the expressway was laid by PM Modi in December 2021. The inauguration aligns with the broader push by the central and state governments to expand infrastructure under initiatives aimed at building a “New India” with modern transport networks.
Government officials have repeatedly highlighted infrastructure as a key driver of economic growth, job creation, and regional balance. Large-scale expressway projects like this are part of a wider strategy to improve connectivity between urban and rural areas, thereby supporting inclusive development.
Public Participation and Land Acquisition
The successful execution of the project involved extensive coordination with local communities, particularly farmers whose land was acquired for construction. Authorities stated that compensation processes were carried out as per norms, and efforts were made to ensure minimal disruption to livelihoods.
The involvement of over 100,000 farmers underscores the scale of the project and the level of public participation required for such infrastructure initiatives.
Travel, Trade and Tourism Gains
Apart from industrial benefits, the expressway is expected to boost tourism by improving access to key destinations, including religious and cultural centres such as Prayagraj and Varanasi.
Faster travel times and better road quality could encourage more domestic tourism, contributing to local economies along the corridor.

With the inauguration of the Ganga Expressway, Uttar Pradesh now has one of the most extensive expressway networks in the country. Officials say the focus will now shift to ensuring efficient operations, safety standards, and further expansion where required.
