Tesla Initiates Hiring in India Following PM Modi-Elon Musk Summit
Tesla Inc. has commenced its hiring process in India, signaling its imminent entry into the market shortly after CEO Elon Musk’s recent meeting with Prime Minister Narendra Modi in the United States. The electric vehicle giant has posted job advertisements on its LinkedIn page, seeking candidates for various roles, both customer-facing and back-end.
As of Monday, Tesla listed 13 positions, with opportunities available in Mumbai and Delhi. Key roles such as service technicians and advisory positions are open in both cities, while customer engagement manager and delivery operations specialist roles are specifically for Mumbai.
Tesla’s engagement with India has seen intermittent discussions over the years, largely due to concerns about high import duties. However, recent reductions in basic customs duties on luxury cars priced above $40,000 from 110% to 70% have likely influenced Tesla’s decision.
While India’s electric vehicle market is still developing compared to China’s vast industry, it presents a significant growth opportunity for Tesla. The company aims to revitalize sales momentum after reporting its first annual decline in electric vehicle sales in over a decade. In 2024, India’s electric car sales reached nearly 100,000 units, a notable contrast to China’s 11 million units.
Tesla’s move into India closely follows Elon Musk’s meeting with both PM Modi and former US President Donald Trump in Washington. Discussions included potential trade negotiations and strategic military partnerships, although it remains unclear whether Musk’s role in these talks was as a CEO of private companies or in his capacity related to his involvement with the cryptocurrency Dogecoin.
