LPG Cylinders Priced at Rs 1,500 in Some Areas Amid Panic Buying; Authorities Say No Nationwide Shortage

Long queues for LPG cylinders amid concerns over LPG cylinder shortage in India

Reports of liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) cylinders being sold at prices as high as Rs 1,500 in some local markets have surfaced amid heightened tensions linked to the ongoing Iran-Israel conflict, prompting panic buying in parts of India. Long queues were reported outside certain distribution points, as consumers rushed to secure refills over fears of a potential supply disruption.

However, officials from public sector oil marketing companies said there is no nationwide shortage of LPG and urged consumers not to panic.

Panic Buying After Global Tensions Escalate

The recent escalation between Iran and Israel has raised concerns globally about energy supply chains, particularly crude oil shipments through key maritime routes. India imports a significant portion of its crude oil requirements, and any disruption in West Asian supply routes often triggers anxiety in domestic markets.

Following news reports and social media discussions linking the conflict to possible fuel supply disruptions, some localities witnessed increased demand for domestic LPG cylinders. Retail distributors in a few areas reported unusually high footfall, with customers seeking immediate refills even before their scheduled booking dates.

In certain cases, consumers alleged that cylinders were being sold at higher-than-usual rates in the open market. The official price of domestic LPG cylinders is determined by government-notified rates and varies by state due to taxes and transportation costs.

Oil Companies Deny Supply Disruption

Officials from Indian Oil Corporation, Bharat Petroleum Corporation Limited, and Hindustan Petroleum Corporation Limited said LPG supplies remain stable across the country.

A senior official from one of the oil marketing companies, speaking on condition of anonymity as they were not authorised to speak to the media, said there is “no disruption in LPG imports or domestic bottling operations.”

“There is adequate stock available at bottling plants and distribution centres. Consumers are advised to follow regular booking cycles and avoid panic purchases,” the official said.

The companies also clarified that LPG supply chains operate under long-term contracts and diversified sourcing arrangements, which help cushion short-term geopolitical shocks.

Government Monitoring Situation

Officials in the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas said the government is closely monitoring global developments but indicated that there is no immediate cause for concern regarding LPG availability.

India sources crude oil from multiple countries, and the government has previously stated that supply diversification helps mitigate risks arising from regional conflicts.

Energy analysts note that while geopolitical tensions can impact global crude prices, retail LPG availability within India depends on a combination of imports, domestic production, and inventory management.

Consumers Urged Not to Hoard

Industry representatives warned that panic buying can create artificial shortages at the local level, even when overall supplies are adequate.

“When consumers rush to refill cylinders ahead of schedule, it can temporarily strain local distribution networks,” said an LPG distributor in northern India. “But that does not mean there is a national shortage.”

Authorities have urged consumers to rely on official announcements rather than unverified messages circulating on social media.

No Official Price Revision Announced

As of now, there has been no official announcement regarding an increase in subsidised domestic LPG cylinder prices linked to the Iran-Israel conflict. Any revision in LPG pricing is typically communicated by the oil marketing companies and reflected in official rate charts.

While global energy markets continue to respond to developments in West Asia, officials maintain that LPG supplies in India remain steady.

Consumers are advised to book refills through authorised channels and report any overcharging to relevant authorities.
