Google Issues Ultimatum to Fitbit Users Migrate to Google Accounts or Lose Data by 2026

Google Issues Ultimatum to Fitbit Users Migrate to Google Accounts or Lose Data by 2026

Google has set a firm deadline for Fitbit users to migrate their data to Google Accounts by February 2, 2026, or risk losing all stored health and fitness data.

Google Issues Ultimatum to Fitbit Users Migrate to Google Accounts or Lose Data by 2026

Google has officially warned Fitbit users that they must merge their accounts with Google Accounts by February 2, 2026, or face permanent data loss. The tech giant had previously announced this transition but has now issued a firm deadline, urging users to act swiftly to retain their health, fitness, and wellness data.

Google’s Deadline for Fitbit Users

According to a report in Forbes, Google recently sent out emails to Fitbit users, emphasizing the importance of migrating their accounts. If users fail to complete the transition, their stored data—including exercise history, heart rate records, sleep schedules, and blood oxygen saturation (SpO2) levels—will be permanently deleted, except where retention is required by law.

Who Needs to Take Action?

  • Existing Fitbit Users: Anyone who has been using Fitbit with a separate Fitbit account must migrate to a Google Account before the deadline.
  • Users Logging in with Gmail: Even those using a Gmail address for Fitbit sign-in must formally switch to a Google Account.
  • Newer Device Users: If you have purchased a new Fitbit device recently, this migration may have already been completed during the setup process.

How to Export Fitbit Data Before the Deadline

For users who want to keep a copy of their data before the transition, Google provides a simple process to export Fitbit data:

  1. Go to Fitbit settings and navigate to Data Export under the Settings menu.
  2. Click Request Data under Export Your Account Archive.
  3. An email will be sent to confirm your data export request.
  4. Once confirmed, a second email will be sent with a download link.
  5. Save the data file to your computer for future access.

Why Is Google Merging Fitbit Accounts?

Google acquired Fitbit in January 2021 for $2.1 billion, aiming to integrate the wearable fitness brand into its broader ecosystem. The transition process began in mid-2023 but was extended due to the large number of Fitbit users requiring migration. By consolidating Fitbit data under Google Accounts, the company aims to improve user experience and streamline data management.

Recent Issues with Fitbit Devices

The transition deadline comes amid other Fitbit-related concerns. In January 2024, Google announced a battery performance program for Fitbit Sense and Fitbit Versa 3 models, following concerns about potential overheating risks.

According to Google, a “limited number” of devices posed overheating risks, leading the company to roll out a firmware update to mitigate the issue. The update aimed to improve battery stability but also reduced battery life, requiring users to charge their devices more frequently.

With the February 2, 2026, deadline now set in stone, Fitbit users must act quickly to migrate their accounts to Google Accounts. Failure to do so will result in the loss of all health and fitness data. Google’s push for a unified login system is part of a broader effort to integrate Fitbit into its ecosystem while ensuring enhanced data security and streamlined functionality.

For those who wish to preserve their fitness history, exporting and saving their data before the deadline is highly recommended.
